USAA auto insurance profile

United Services Automobile Association. Quotes online, by phone and in the USAA mobile app, for members only.

USAA sells auto insurance only to its membership, which is built around the military community and eligible family members, listed in the eligibility note on this page in USAA's own terms. For households that qualify, USAA quotes online, by phone and in its app, and offers the standard coverage set with two driving programs, one behavior-based and one mileage-based. If you qualify, USAA belongs on every quote list you build, because a restricted-eligibility insurer prices against a different risk pool than the open-market companies.

Programs USAA advertises

SafePilot

USAA's app-based driving program. USAA describes it as an optional program that may reward safe driving at renewal.

SafePilot Miles

USAA's separate low-mileage option, which USAA says suits drivers who cover few miles a year, with the rate adjusting to mileage.

Eligibility limits

USAA membership is required before you can buy. USAA's own eligibility list covers active-duty military, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans who have honorably served, contracted ROTC cadets and midshipmen, officer and warrant officer candidates, service academy appointees, and spouses and children of USAA members. If none of those describe your household, USAA cannot quote you, and your time is better spent on the other companies in this directory.

What to ask when you quote USAA

Ask USAA to confirm every driver and vehicle in your household is eligible under your membership, and ask how deployment or a period of vehicle storage would be priced before you need it, not after orders arrive.

USAA is not a stock company or a conventional mutual. Its bylaws, as amended May 30, 2025, describe United Services Automobile Association as a reciprocal interinsurance exchange organized under Texas law, with its home office in San Antonio. Auto policies are issued either by the exchange itself or by USAA subsidiaries such as USAA Casualty Insurance Company, USAA General Indemnity Company and Garrison Property and Casualty Insurance Company.

Which of those four companies issued your policy decides which complaint record applies to it, and whether you hold membership in the exchange.

How membership in the exchange works

Under Article II of the bylaws, membership starts when USAA issues a property and casualty policy to an eligible person and that person signs a subscriber's agreement and power of attorney naming the attorney-in-fact. Membership lasts as long as the member has a policy in force with USAA. The bylaws list eligibility categories that the board defines, starting with commissioned, warrant and non-commissioned officers and enlisted servicemembers, along with cadets and midshipmen.

The bylaws treat the exchange and its subsidiaries differently. For example, a person named as the insured on a policy issued by a USAA subsidiary may be elected a director, but the membership article ties membership to a policy issued by USAA itself. Your declarations page names the issuing company.

Four USAA auto writers and their Colorado figures

Colorado's Division of Insurance publishes an index for each auto insurer that weighs its slice of complaints against its slice of premium, with 1.00 as the market average and premium protests included. All four USAA companies sat below 1.00 in 2025.

Colorado DOI auto standard reports for 2025 and 2024.

Each company is reported on its own line with its own premium base, and the report does not combine them, so neither does this page. The exchange itself had the lowest 2025 complaint ratio of the four, 0.10 complaints per $1 million of premium.

California and New Jersey readings

California measures justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures. The 2025 composite shows United Services Automobile Association at 2.3 (about 388,762 exposures), USAA Casualty at 2.7 (528,111), Garrison at 3.2 (308,442) and USAA General Indemnity at 3.4 (357,371). In 2024 the exchange itself read 4.7 on 18 justified complaints, the highest of the four that year.

New Jersey reports one USAA Group line. In 2024 it showed 31 valid complaints over 267,616 insured vehicles, or 0.1158 per 1,000 autos, for an index of 2.217 against a state average of 1.00. The 2023 group index was 2.199 on 26 complaints. That is a group figure, so it cannot be split among the four companies.

What USAA reported for 2025

USAA's release on its 2025 Annual Report to Members, dated April 23, 2026, says USAA returned a record $3.8 billion in financial rewards to members and provided nearly $450 million in relief to more than 127,000 members affected by government shutdowns. It says about half of USAA policyholders are expected to see an auto premium decrease in 2026, depending on state and individual circumstances, and that it paid nearly $1.7 billion in claims after the January 2025 California wildfires.

The same release describes USAA as founded in 1922 by a group of military officers, serving 14 million members and employing more than 38,000 people, with offices in eight U.S. cities and three overseas locations.

USAA questions

What is a reciprocal interinsurance exchange?

In USAA's case, it is the legal form named in Article I of its bylaws: an exchange organized under Texas law in which members sign a subscriber's agreement and power of attorney authorizing an attorney-in-fact to act under that agreement. It is neither a shareholder-owned stock company nor a mutual. The form matters mainly for member rights and governance, not for the coverage terms in your auto policy.

Am I a USAA member if Garrison or USAA Casualty issued my policy?

The bylaws start membership with a property and casualty policy issued by USAA and a signed subscriber's agreement, and they keep it while a USAA policy stays in force. Policies from subsidiaries such as Garrison Property and Casualty or USAA Casualty are issued by separate companies. Ask USAA which entity issued your policy and whether your household holds an exchange membership.

Why is the New Jersey USAA index above 2 when Colorado figures are below 1?

The states measure different things. New Jersey counts valid complaints per 1,000 insured autos for the whole USAA Group. Colorado counts all complaints, including premium protests, against premium for each company. A group reading of 2.217 in New Jersey and company readings of 0.41 to 0.80 in Colorado can both be accurate. Neither predicts how a single claim will be handled.

Does the $3.8 billion member return lower my quote?

USAA describes the $3.8 billion as financial rewards returned to members during 2025, which is a distribution after premiums were charged. A new quote shows the premium for the coverage you select. When comparing USAA with another insurer, compare the quoted premium at the same limits and deductibles, and treat any later distribution as uncertain until USAA declares it.

Where do I complain if a USAA claim goes wrong?

File first with USAA and keep the claim number and dates. If that fails, contact the insurance department in the state where the policy was issued, naming the exact company on the declarations page, for example USAA General Indemnity Company. The claim guide lists what to document before you escalate.
