Liberty Mutual auto insurance profile

Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, part of Liberty Mutual Group. Quotes online and through agents.

Liberty Mutual sells personal auto insurance online and through agents, with the standard coverage set and a published list of optional add-ons that includes accident forgiveness and gap coverage. Its RightTrack program is the shopping variable to pin down: the enrollment discount is immediate, while the scored part of the price arrives at renewal, so a first quote and a renewal quote from Liberty Mutual are not measuring the same thing. Note both numbers when you record the quote in the worksheet.

RightTrack

Liberty Mutual's driving program. Liberty Mutual states that participants receive a discount for enrolling, that driving habits such as braking, acceleration and time of day are reviewed, and that the score is applied to the premium at renewal.

Better Car Replacement

An optional add-on Liberty Mutual describes as paying toward a replacement car one model year newer, with fewer miles, if yours is a total loss. Liberty Mutual states it is not available for leased vehicles or motorcycles.

What to ask when you quote Liberty Mutual

Ask how much of the quoted price is the RightTrack participation discount, what the price would be without the program, and which add-ons in the quote are optional rather than required by your lender.

Liberty Mutual auto coverage is underwritten by companies owned or controlled by Liberty Mutual Holding Company Inc., a Massachusetts mutual holding company based at 175 Berkeley Street, Boston. Only policyholders of eight named member companies are members of that holding company. Auto policies can also be issued by non-member companies such as LM General Insurance Company (NAIC 36447, Illinois) or Safeco Insurance Company of America (NAIC 24740, New Hampshire).

This profile sorts out those entities, the 2025 retail figures, and complaint readings by company and year.

Members and non-members under the holding company

Liberty Mutual's member information page lists the member companies as Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Employers Insurance of Wausau, Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company, State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company, Liberty Mutual Mid-Atlantic Insurance Company, Montgomery Mutual Insurance Company and Patrons Mutual Insurance Company of Connecticut. These were once mutual insurers whose policyholders moved into the holding company structure with state regulators' approval.

A named insured on an in-force policy from one of those eight is a member, with rights to vote for directors, to share in value if the company demutualizes or dissolves, and to receive member dividends if the board declares them. The page states plainly that holders of policies from other Liberty Mutual group companies are not members. The trade names on the page include Liberty Mutual Insurance, Safeco Insurance and State Auto.

Auto underwriting companies, codes and domicile

Liberty Mutual's insurer licensing page says each underwriting company is a separate legal entity, and gives its NAIC number and home state. The four below are the Liberty Mutual companies that appear in Colorado's 2025 standard auto complaint report.

Safeco was acquired by Liberty Mutual in 2008. The former Safeco site now says the Safeco name is retired, that Safeco customers keep their agent relationship, and that more than 20,000 insurance agencies sell Liberty Mutual.

US Retail Markets in the 2025 results

Liberty Mutual reports personal auto inside its US Retail Markets unit, which it describes as providing auto, home, renters and other personal and small commercial coverage countrywide. Its full-year 2025 release, dated March 4, 2026, shows US Retail Markets net written premium of $26,468 million, down 6.4% from $28,279 million in 2024. Consolidated net written premium was $43,566 million, the consolidated combined ratio was 88.4%, and net income attributable to the holding company was $6.792 billion. The release does not split out an auto-only premium figure.

Complaint readings, one company at a time

Colorado reports a complaint index for each auto insurer: the company's portion of complaints divided by its portion of premium, so 1.00 is the state average, with renewal and cancellation protests counted. Safeco Insurance Company of America read 0.79 in 2025 on 53 complaints (21 confirmed) and $268.73 million, after 1.09 in 2024 and 0.95 in 2023. Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company read 1.60 in 2025, 1.79 in 2024 and 1.53 in 2023. American Economy read 0.50 in 2025 and LM General 1.01.

California's 2025 composite, which counts justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures, lists two Liberty Mutual companies: Safeco Insurance Company of America at 4.3 (about 393,414 exposures; 3.1 in 2024) and Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company at 10.8 (about 120,614 exposures; 5.0 in 2024).

New Jersey's report shows a single Liberty Mutual Group line: 21 valid complaints across 191,521 insured vehicles in 2024, a ratio of 0.1096 per 1,000 autos and an index of 2.099. In 2023 the group had 21 valid complaints over 253,776 vehicles, an index of 1.869.

Liberty Mutual questions

Does buying Liberty Mutual auto insurance make me a member of the mutual?

Only if the policy is issued by one of the eight member companies on Liberty Mutual's member information page, such as Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company or Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. A policy from LM General, Safeco Insurance Company of America or American Economy does not carry membership. The issuing company is printed on your declarations page.

What happened to Safeco auto policies?

Liberty Mutual bought Safeco in 2008 and has since retired the Safeco brand. Its notice says Safeco customers keep their independent agent and that policies are not affected beyond the name change. The legal entity Safeco Insurance Company of America still appears under its own name in the 2025 Colorado and California complaint reports.

Can Liberty Mutual write my auto policy in New Jersey?

Several of its auto underwriting companies are not licensed there: the licensing page excludes New Jersey for LM General, American Economy and LM Property and Casualty, and Liberty Mutual Personal Insurance Company's state list does not include it. Other group companies are licensed in all states. A New Jersey quote, if offered, will come from one of those, and New Jersey publishes a group complaint figure for Liberty Mutual.

Why is the California reading for Liberty Mutual Fire so much higher than for Safeco?

California divides justified complaints by earned exposures. Liberty Mutual Fire had 13 justified complaints on about 120,614 exposures in 2025, a ratio of 10.8 per 100,000, while Safeco Insurance Company of America had 17 on about 393,414, a ratio of 4.3. They are separate insurers with different books of business, so the two readings are reported and should be read separately.

Do Liberty Mutual members receive dividends?

The member information page says members have a right to receive member dividends as, if and when declared and paid by the board. That is not a promise of payment in any year. Policyholders of non-member companies in the group have no such membership right. For a quote comparison, use the premium as quoted at fixed limits; see the quote comparison guide.
