NJM Insurance auto insurance profile
NJM Insurance Company, part of NJM Insurance Group. Quotes online and by phone, direct from the company, with exclusive agents supporting policyholders.
NJM Insurance sells personal auto insurance direct to residents of five Mid-Atlantic states: Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Its coverage list follows the standard set, liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and medical expenses, with endorsements for gap coverage, roadside assistance, transportation expense, and rideshare use. Policies with comprehensive and collision also include limited pet coverage, new car replacement, and limited vehicle customization coverage on NJM's published terms. Two features set NJM apart in a comparison: a voluntary SafeDrive app program with a participation discount, and dividends for New Jersey policyholders that are credited at renewal when NJM declares them.

Programs NJM Insurance advertises
NJM SafeDrive
NJM's voluntary smartphone app program. NJM states that the app monitors driving and provides feedback on acceleration, speed, braking, cornering and distracted driving, and that drivers who enroll automatically receive a participation discount on their auto policy.
Dividends
NJM states that New Jersey policyholders are eligible to receive dividends, as a percentage of the prior year's premium, applied as a credit to the policy premium when the policy renews the following year. NJM states that New Jersey auto policyholders may also receive a second, special dividend by check, that dividend payment is not guaranteed, and that dividends are not paid on all policy forms or in every state where NJM operates.
Eligibility limits
NJM sells personal auto insurance only to residents of Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. If you do not live in one of those five states, NJM cannot quote you.
What to ask when you quote NJM Insurance
Ask NJM to confirm your state is one of the five it writes in, and, if you live in New Jersey, ask whether your policy form is dividend eligible, how a dividend would be credited at renewal, and that payment is not guaranteed. Ask what the SafeDrive participation discount covers, which drivers on the policy must use the app to keep it, and whether the gap endorsement can still be added if you are past 30 days from adding the car.
NJM personal auto coverage is provided and underwritten by NJM Insurance Company and its subsidiaries, based at 301 Sullivan Way, West Trenton, New Jersey. NJM describes itself as a direct writer of personal insurance, supported by a select group of exclusive agents. In New Jersey's 2024 auto report, the NJM Group insured 912,378 vehicles and drew 2 valid complaints, an index of 0.042.
NJM began in workers' compensation and opened personal auto to the general public in its home states only from 2018. That history explains its five-state footprint.
From a 1913 workers' compensation carrier to five-state auto
NJM's company milestones, as published on its About page, trace the steps below. They show why the auto book is concentrated in New Jersey and why some states joined only recently.
- 1913: New Jersey Manufacturers Casualty Insurance Company is founded to provide workers' compensation to New Jersey businesses.
- 1921: NJM forms a subsidiary to write commercial and personal auto and homeowners coverage, extending service to the employees of its commercial customers.
- 1966: the home office moves to its current 100-acre campus in West Trenton.
- 2018: NJM removes membership restrictions and opens auto, homeowners, renters and umbrella insurance to all New Jersey and Pennsylvania residents.
- 2020: personal lines become available to Connecticut residents.
- 2021: personal lines become available to Ohio and Maryland residents.
Who can buy and how NJM sells
NJM's About page limits personal auto, homeowners, condo, renters and umbrella policies to residents of Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It sells personal lines directly rather than through independent agents, with exclusive agents supporting policyholders. Its business lines work the other way: workers' compensation and commercial auto are sold through independent agents in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. A household in Delaware or New York may therefore know NJM through an employer's workers' compensation policy yet still be unable to buy personal auto from it.
Because NJM writes in so few states, it does not appear in Colorado's or California's auto complaint reports. Outside its five states NJM cannot quote personal auto; inside them, use the quote comparison guide to line NJM up against other insurers.
New Jersey complaint figures, 2023 and 2024
New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance publishes an annual Auto Insurance Consumer Information Report by insurer group. It counts only valid complaints, meaning the insurer broke a law, regulation or policy term, or was otherwise found in error, and divides them by insured autos. An index of 1.00 is the average for the report.
| Report year | Valid complaints | Insured vehicles (Dec 31) | Per 1,000 autos | Index |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2 | 912,378 | 0.0022 | 0.042 |
| 2023 | 3 | 876,028 | 0.0034 | 0.077 |
NJ DOBI figures are for the NJM Group as a whole.
For scale, the 2024 report covers 6,106,383 insured vehicles and 319 valid complaints across all listed groups, so the NJM Group accounted for roughly 15% of the vehicles in the report and under 1% of the valid complaints. In 2023 the report covered 6,031,700 vehicles and 267 valid complaints.
The figure is a group total for New Jersey only. It says nothing about NJM's complaint record in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland or Ohio, where each state's insurance department keeps its own records.
NJM Insurance questions
Which company actually insures an NJM auto policy?
NJM's auto pages state that coverage is provided and underwritten by NJM Insurance Company and its subsidiaries, at 301 Sullivan Way, West Trenton. Your declarations page names the specific company for your policy. Use that name if you contact the insurance department in your state, since each regulator keeps records by legal entity.
Do I need a connection to a New Jersey manufacturer to buy NJM auto insurance?
Not anymore. NJM's milestones say that in 2018 it removed membership restrictions and began offering auto, homeowners, renters and umbrella insurance to all New Jersey and Pennsylvania residents. Connecticut followed in 2020, and Ohio and Maryland in 2021. Residency in one of those five states is the condition NJM states today.
Can I buy NJM auto insurance through an independent agent?
For personal auto, NJM says it is a direct writer, with a select group of exclusive agents who support personal insurance policyholders. Independent agents are part of NJM's business insurance channel, not its personal lines. Expect to get the NJM auto quote from NJM itself, and compare that price at the same limits and deductibles as your other quotes.
What does an NJM complaint index of 0.042 mean?
In New Jersey's 2024 report, the NJM Group had 0.0022 valid complaints per 1,000 insured autos, or 2 valid complaints over 912,378 vehicles. The report sets the average at 1.00, so 0.042 is far below it. It is a single-state group figure for one year and does not predict how any one claim will be handled.
Is NJM available in New York or Delaware for personal auto?
No. NJM sells workers' compensation and commercial auto to businesses in New York and Delaware, but its personal auto, homeowners, condo, renters and umbrella policies are limited to residents of Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Drivers who move out of those five states should line up replacement coverage before the move to avoid a coverage lapse.
