Amica auto insurance profile
Amica Mutual Insurance Company. Quotes online and by phone, direct from the company.
Amica sells personal auto insurance direct, online and by phone, as a mutual insurer owned by its policyholders rather than through local or independent agents. Its published coverage list runs from liability, collision and comprehensive to ridesharing or delivery driving coverage and gap coverage. Two choices shape a quote in ways other companies in this directory do not offer: you can price a traditional policy or a dividend policy that may return part of the premium, and you can add individual options or take them as the Platinum Choice Auto package. Record which policy form and package a quote uses before comparing totals.

Programs Amica advertises
Dividend policy
An Amica policy form that returns a portion of the premium as a dividend payment if certain conditions are met. Amica states that dividend policies are not available in every state or on all policy types, that dividends are not guaranteed, and that a policyholder who cancels before the end of the full term is not eligible for a declared dividend.
Platinum Choice Auto
Amica's package of added auto protections in one policy, which Amica describes as including full glass coverage with no deductible for glass losses and identity fraud monitoring. Amica states the individual coverages in the package can also be added to a current Amica auto policy without the package.
Eligibility limits
Amica states that coverage options and discounts are not available in all states and may vary by state, and that dividend policies are not available in every state. Check your state on amica.com before quoting, and confirm the dividend form is sold there if that form is the reason you are quoting Amica.
What to ask when you quote Amica
Ask Amica to price the same car and limits on a traditional policy and on a dividend policy, in writing, and ask in which states the dividend form is sold and what happens to a declared dividend if you cancel before the end of the term. Ask whether each extra you want, such as full glass coverage, gap coverage or new car replacement, is priced on its own or inside Platinum Choice Auto, and what that package adds to the premium.
Amica sells auto insurance through two Rhode Island insurers: Amica Mutual Insurance Company (NAIC 19976), a policyholder-owned mutual, and its wholly owned subsidiary Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 12287). Since January 1, 2014, Amica has split the auto policies it underwrites between them, placing preferred risks with the Mutual and standard risks with the subsidiary, according to Amica P&C's audited 2025 statutory statements.
Amica Mutual earned $3,030 million of premium in 2025, and automobile lines made up over 51% of its direct written premium.
Two companies, one underwriting split
Amica's company facts page gives the parent's name as Amica Mutual Insurance Company, headquartered at 100 Amica Way in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and describes it as a direct writer of personal insurance. Its history traces the company to 1907, when A.T. Vigneron founded the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America in Providence. A sister company chartered in 1914 to provide liability cover was merged in during 1973, and the corporate offices moved to Lincoln in 1994. Amica describes itself as the oldest mutual insurer of automobiles in the United States.
The subsidiary has a shorter, more specific history. Amica P&C was capitalized on June 16, 2005, and until 2014 it was the group's only writer of personal auto in New Jersey. Through 2016 it wrote auto only in New Jersey and New York. It added Georgia, Texas and Rhode Island in 2017, 13 states in 2018 and seven in 2019, reaching 25 states by the end of 2019; its statements say no states have been added since. In those states an Amica auto policy can be issued by either company depending on underwriting criteria, so two Amica policies on the same street may come from different legal entities.
Amica Mutual by the numbers, 2025 statutory statements
| Item | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Premiums earned (all lines, $ thousands) | 2,830,605 | 3,029,707 |
| Dividends to policyholders ($ thousands) | 151,809 | 162,043 |
| Share of policies in force that were participating | 56.9% | 56.7% |
Statements prepared under practices prescribed or permitted by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation, Insurance Division. Premiums cover auto, homeowners and other lines.
Note 1 to the Mutual's statements adds three facts about its book. It is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. About 70% of its business was written outside the Northeast at the end of 2025, a shift from a historically Northeastern base. And over 51% of direct written premium came from automobile lines, with about 43% from homeowners. The dividend figures above are company totals for participating policies of all types; whether any one policy receives a dividend depends on its form and state.
Six-month auto terms in some states
Amica P&C's statements report that, starting in November 2018, the subsidiary began moving auto policies in selected states to six-month terms at renewal, and that new auto policies in those states are written only on six-month terms. The rollout was complete by December 31, 2021. A six-month policy reprices twice a year, so when you compare an Amica quote with an annual-term quote from another company, double the six-month figure or halve the annual one before comparing. Our quote comparison guide covers term matching.

| New York | 2024 filing year | Amica P&C | 0 upheld of 2, $5.1M, ratio 0 | Same |
Amica does not appear in the Illinois 2025 list, which includes only companies with five or more auto complaints.
Amica's Colorado auto book is small, about $33 million a year, so a handful of complaints moves its index a long way: the detail report shows 2.12 in 2022, 0.76 in 2023, 0.34 in 2024 and 0.85 in 2025. Read the multi-year run rather than one year. The Colorado and Texas pages carry those states' own rules.
Amica questions
Is my Amica policy from Amica Mutual or Amica Property and Casualty?
Check the declarations page. Amica P&C's statements say that since 2014 Amica has placed preferred auto business with Amica Mutual and standard business with Amica P&C, in the 25 states where the subsidiary writes auto. Outside those states the Mutual is the writer. Each company has its own NAIC code, 19976 and 12287, and its own complaint record.
Who owns Amica?
Amica Mutual Insurance Company is a mutual insurer owned by its policyholders, as Amica states on its about page. Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company is a Rhode Island-domiciled stock subsidiary solely owned and managed by Amica Mutual, according to its audited statements. A policy with either company sits inside the same mutual group.
How much did Amica pay in policyholder dividends in 2025?
Amica Mutual's 2025 statutory statements report dividends to policyholders of $162.0 million, against $151.8 million in 2024. At year-end 2025, 56.7% of policies in force were participating policies. These are totals across all lines, so they do not show what any one auto policyholder received or will receive.
Why are some Amica P&C auto policies six months long?
Amica P&C began switching auto policies in selected states to six-month terms at renewal in November 2018, and new auto policies in those states are written for six months only. The change was complete by the end of 2021. A shorter term lets the company respond to underwriting conditions sooner, as its statements put it.
Where is Amica licensed to sell auto insurance?
Amica Mutual's statements say it is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Amica P&C writes auto in 25 states, a number unchanged since the end of 2019. Because the subsidiary is limited to those 25 states, applicants elsewhere can only be placed with Amica Mutual, whatever their underwriting profile.
