Mercury Insurance auto insurance profile
Mercury Insurance, part of Mercury General Corporation. Quotes online, by phone, and through independent agents.

Its published coverage list covers liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and medical coverage, with rental car, roadside assistance, and ride hailing cover as added options. The comparison point is MercuryGO, its app-based driving program, which gives feedback on braking, acceleration, speeding, cornering, and distracted driving and links the renewal price to how you drive. MercuryGO is not sold in every Mercury state, so check both lists before you quote.

Programs Mercury Insurance advertises
MercuryGO
Mercury's app-based driving program. Mercury states that MercuryGO provides real-time feedback and skill scores for distracted driving, braking, acceleration, speeding and cornering, that enrolling gives a participation discount, and that driving in the program can earn a further discount at renewal. Mercury states MercuryGO is only available in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.
Eligibility limits
Mercury sells auto insurance only in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia. If Mercury does not write in your state, it cannot quote you. MercuryGO is sold in a smaller set of those states.
What to ask when you quote Mercury Insurance
Ask the agent whether Mercury writes in your state and whether MercuryGO is sold there, because the two state lists differ. Ask what participation discount applies at enrollment, how your driving score in the app would set the renewal price, and whether rental car benefit and roadside assistance are included in the quote or priced as separate add-ons at the limits you want.
Mercury Insurance is the brand of Mercury General Corporation, a California-incorporated public holding company in Los Angeles that writes personal auto through 12 insurance subsidiaries in 11 states. California dominates the book: of $3,591 million in 2025 private passenger auto direct premiums written, $3,083 million came from California, according to Mercury General's 2025 Form 10-K.
That concentration means California's Proposition 103 rules and California complaint data say more about Mercury than any national figure. Both are covered below.
Twelve insurers, one holding company
The 10-K says Mercury General is the parent of Mercury Casualty Company, a California auto insurer founded in 1961 by George Joseph, who chairs the board. Each subsidiary has a primary territory, and the one that issues a policy depends on the state.
| Subsidiary | Formed or acquired | Primary states |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury Casualty Company | 1961 | CA, AZ, NV, NY, VA |
| Mercury Insurance Company | 1972 | CA |
| California Automobile Insurance Company | 1975 | CA |
| Mercury Insurance Company of Illinois | 1989 | IL, NJ |
| Mercury Insurance Company of Georgia | 1989 | GA |
| American Mercury Insurance Company | 1996 | OK, CA, TX, VA |
| Mercury Indemnity Company of America | 2001 | FL, NJ |
Partial list. Other subsidiaries include California General Underwriters, Mercury Indemnity Company of Georgia, Mercury Insurance Company of Texas, Mercury County Mutual and Orion Indemnity.
Effective August 13, 2025, American Mercury Lloyds Insurance Company was converted from a Lloyd's plan to a stock company and renamed Mercury Insurance Company of Texas.
Auto premium by state, 2023 to 2025
Private passenger auto was 60.0% of Mercury's $5,983 million of total 2025 direct premiums written; homeowners was 27.3%. Auto premium grew from $2,842 million in 2023 to $3,396 million in 2024 and $3,591 million in 2025. California auto premium rose from $2,318 million in 2023 to $3,083 million in 2025, while Texas auto ranged between $122 million and $128 million and the nine other states together fell from $423 million in 2024 to $386 million in 2025. The 10-K reports a private passenger auto combined ratio of 89.5% for 2025.
In California, the 10-K says drivers who meet the state's good driver definition held about 85% of Mercury's voluntary auto policies in force at the end of 2025, and that about 99% of California auto renewal offers were accepted in 2025 and 2024.
How Mercury sells and who sets its rates
Mercury sells through a network of about 8,510 independent agents, of whom about 2,670 are in California, 1,140 in Florida and 1,910 in Texas, plus its wholly owned agencies AIS and PoliSeek and internet sales portals. Policies bought online are assigned to an agent or agency for service. Independent agents and agencies other than AIS and PoliSeek produced about 88% of 2025 direct premiums written, and none produced more than 3.0% in any of the last three years.
Rates need prior approval from the insurance department in California, Georgia, New York, New Jersey and Nevada. In Illinois, Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona they must be filed before use, and Florida uses a modified use-and-file law. Under California's Proposition 103, the 10-K notes, rates must weigh driving record first, annual miles second and years of driving experience third, good drivers get at least a 20% discount, and an insurer may not refuse a good driver. The rate filing guide explains how to look up an approved filing.
Complaint data for Mercury companies
California's Automobile Complaint Composite Report counts justified complaints for every 100,000 earned exposures, motorcycles and motor homes included. Mercury Insurance Company, with about 1,535,043 exposures in 2025, read 1.2, down from 1.7 in 2024 and 2.2 in 2023, on 19, 26 and 36 justified complaints. California Automobile Insurance Company read 1.5 in 2025 on about 132,964 exposures, after 1.6 and 2.9.
Outside California, the readings are thin. New Jersey's 2023 report lists the Mercury General Group with 11,661 insured vehicles and no valid complaints; Mercury does not appear in the 2024 New Jersey report, where ratios are calculated only for companies with at least 10,000 insured autos. Colorado's reports do not list Mercury, which does not write there.
Mercury Insurance questions
Is Mercury Insurance a mutual company?
No. Mercury General Corporation is a holding company incorporated in California that files annual 10-K reports with the SEC, and its insurers, such as Mercury Casualty Company and Mercury Insurance Company, are subsidiaries. Mercury County Mutual Insurance Company in Texas is one of the 12 insurance subsidiaries listed in the 10-K, but the parent is shareholder-owned.
How much of Mercury auto business is in California?
In 2025, $3,083 million of Mercury's $3,591 million in private passenger auto direct premiums written came from California, about 86%. Texas supplied $123 million and the other nine states $386 million combined. California's Department of Insurance therefore oversees the large majority of Mercury's auto pricing, under the prior approval rules of Proposition 103.
Why does a Mercury quote come through an agent even when I start online?
The 10-K says policies sold through Mercury's internet portals are assigned to and serviced by its agents and agencies, including its own AIS and PoliSeek agencies. Expect an agent's name on the policy. Independent agents may also offer quotes from other insurers, so ask for the Mercury price at the limits you specify.
What does California's good driver rule mean for a Mercury quote?
Proposition 103, as summarized in the 10-K, requires at least a 20% discount from the otherwise applicable rate for drivers who meet California's good driver definition and bars refusing them coverage. About 85% of Mercury's voluntary California auto policies were held by good drivers at the end of 2025. Ask the agent to confirm whether the discount is applied to each driver on your quote.
Which Mercury company handles a New Jersey or Florida policy?
The 10-K lists Mercury Insurance Company of Illinois and Mercury Indemnity Company of America with New Jersey among their primary states, and Mercury Indemnity Company of America for Florida. Your declarations page names the actual issuer. Use that legal name when you contact the state regulator or look up complaint records.
