INSURANCE COMPANIES

Travelers auto insurance profile

The Travelers Companies, Inc. group, including The Travelers Indemnity Company. Quotes online and through independent agents.

Travelers sells personal auto insurance online and through independent agents, and its own coverage pages lay out the standard set plus loan or lease gap coverage and extended transportation expenses coverage for rentals and other transport after a covered claim. Because an independent agent can place you with several insurers, a Travelers quote often arrives inside a comparison the agent built. Ask for the Travelers number on its own, at your fixed limits and deductibles, so it can sit in the worksheet next to the quotes you gathered yourself.

Programs Travelers advertises

IntelliDrive

Travelers' 90-day app-based driving program. Travelers states that driving behavior is captured and scored over 90 days, that enrolling can save on the first term, and that at renewal safe driving can lower the premium while riskier driving can raise it.

IntelliDrivePlus

A continuous version of Travelers' driving program. Travelers states it scores driving behavior and miles driven over recurring 90-day monitoring periods before each renewal.

What to ask when you quote Travelers

Ask whether the quoted price assumes IntelliDrive enrollment, what score period sets the renewal price, and whether the agent compared the same coverage specification across every insurer they quoted for you.

Travelers personal auto is written by insurance subsidiaries of The Travelers Companies, Inc., a shareholder-owned holding company incorporated under Minnesota law whose principal domestic insurers are domiciled in Connecticut. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports $7,745 million of domestic automobile net written premiums, down 2% from 2024, and about 8.4 million domestic Personal Insurance policies in force across auto and property.

Most of that business reaches drivers through independent agents. The sections below cover the legal entities, the 2025 filing and complaint readings.

The Travelers Companies, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025, Item 1.

Auto was 44.4% of Personal Insurance premium in 2025. The 10-K says auto retention stayed strong and comparable with 2024, renewal premium changes stayed positive but smaller than in 2024, and new auto business premiums rose. Domestic active policies, auto and property together, fell from about 8.8 million at the end of 2024 to 8.4 million at the end of 2025.

Travelers agreed in May 2025 to sell its Canadian personal insurance business to Definity Financial Corporation; the 10-K says the sale closed on January 2, 2026.

Where Travelers personal auto premium comes from

The 10-K describes principal markets for personal products as spread throughout the contiguous United States and publishes each state that supplied 3.0% or more of 2025 Personal Insurance direct written premium. These shares cover auto and property together.

Agents, contact centers and direct channels

According to the 10-K, Personal Insurance products are sold primarily through thousands of independent agents and brokers, supported by staff in seven sales regions and by contact centers. About two thousand agencies generally pay a fee to hand ongoing customer service to Travelers' Customer Care Program, which handles billing questions, coverage discussions and policy changes for them. Travelers also sells directly through direct mail, digital marketing and affinity partners such as employers, credit unions and consumer associations, increasingly through its own wholly owned independent agency.

Travelers companies seen in state complaint data

The 10-K names the Travelers Reinsurance Pool, whose members include The Standard Fire Insurance Company, The Automobile Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, The Travelers Home and Marine Insurance Company, Travelers Commercial Insurance Company, Travelers Personal Insurance Company and Travelers Personal Security Insurance Company. The pool is a reinsurance arrangement among those companies, but each remains its own licensed insurer, and states report complaints by that legal name.

Colorado's auto report sets each writer's complaint share against its premium share (1.00 equals average; protests over renewals count). The Standard Fire Insurance Company, NAIC 19070 in that report, held 3.15% of Colorado auto premium in 2025 ($245.39 million) and drew 31 complaints, 12 confirmed, for an index of 0.50. It read 0.46 in 2024 and 0.64 in 2023.

California's composite lists Travelers Commercial Insurance Company at 2.7 justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures in 2025 (about 262,948 exposures), after 2.8 in 2024 and 1.7 in 2023.

New Jersey reports the Travelers Group as a whole: 13 valid complaints over 227,932 insured vehicles in 2024, a ratio of 0.0570 per 1,000 autos and an index of 1.092, compared with 8 complaints and an index of 0.750 in 2023.

Travelers questions

Which Travelers company is on my auto policy?

Travelers uses many insurers, among them The Standard Fire Insurance Company, Travelers Home and Marine, Travelers Commercial Insurance Company and The Automobile Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut. The declarations page names the one that issued your policy. That name, not the brand, is what to use with a state insurance department, since complaint data is published by legal entity.

Is Travelers personal auto shrinking?

In premium terms it fell slightly. Domestic automobile net written premiums were $7,745 million in 2025 against $7,925 million in 2024, a 2% decrease, after rising from $7,330 million in 2023. At the same time the 10-K reports higher new business premiums in auto and strong retention. Policy counts are published for auto and property combined, not auto alone.

Does Travelers still sell personal auto in Canada?

No longer, based on the 2025 Form 10-K. Travelers agreed on May 27, 2025 to sell its Canadian personal insurance business and most of its Canadian commercial business to Definity Financial Corporation for about US$2.4 billion, and the sale closed on January 2, 2026. Travelers kept its surety business in Canada.

Why does Texas carry the largest share of Travelers personal premium?

The 10-K lists Texas at 9.5% of 2025 Personal Insurance direct written premium and notes that the figure includes business written through a fronting agreement with another insurer. That means part of the Texas total is written on another company's paper. A Texas driver should check which insurer is named on the policy itself.

How do I compare an independent agent quote that includes Travelers?

Ask the agent for the Travelers price on its own, with the issuing company named, at the same liability, uninsured motorist and physical damage limits and deductibles as your other quotes. Record each in the quote worksheet so the comparison does not depend on the agent's packaging of several insurers.
