Auto-Owners auto insurance profile

Auto-Owners Insurance Company. Quotes through local independent agents who represent Auto-Owners.

Auto-Owners sells personal auto insurance only through independent agents, and its own coverages page is the plainest in this directory: collision, comprehensive, bodily injury and property damage liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist, medical payments and personal injury protection, road trouble service, and additional expense coverage for rentals and trip costs after an accident. There is no driving-score program to decode. The comparison work is therefore simple: get the agent to price your fixed specification, and record what the additional expense coverage pays per day and in total, because rental terms are where plain-looking quotes quietly differ.

Programs Auto-Owners advertises

Road Trouble Service

Auto-Owners' roadside coverage, which the company says operates 24 hours a day in all 50 states and Canada for covered events such as a flat tire, a dead battery or keys locked in the car.

Additional Expense coverage

An Auto-Owners coverage the company describes as helping with a rental car when you cannot use your vehicle after an accident, and with food and lodging if you are stranded away from home.

Eligibility limits

Auto-Owners sells through independent agents in the states where it operates rather than nationwide, and it does not sell direct online. If no agent in your area represents it, you cannot get an Auto-Owners quote.

What to ask when you quote Auto-Owners

Ask the agent for the daily and total limits on additional expense coverage, whether road trouble service is included or added, and which other insurers the same agency can quote against the identical specification.

Auto-Owners Insurance Company (NAIC 18988), headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, recorded $15,061 million of net written premium in 2025, up 8.0%, and the wider Auto-Owners Insurance Group recorded $16,828 million across 16 property and casualty companies and one life insurer, per its 2025 annual report. It sells through about 50,000 independent agents in 26 states. In some states the policy you receive is issued by an affiliate such as Owners Insurance Company (NAIC 32700) rather than by the parent.

Origins and the companies in the group

Auto-Owners' history page says Vern V. Moulton and four associates organized Auto-Owners Insurance Company in July 1916 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The home office moved to Lansing in 1917 and has stayed there. Indiana, in December 1935, was the first state the company wrote in outside Michigan.

The 2025 annual report names four companies in the core group alongside Auto-Owners Insurance Company: Home-Owners Insurance Company, Owners Insurance Company, Property-Owners Insurance Company and Southern-Owners Insurance Company. Three further affiliates run separately with their own territories:

For a personal auto buyer, the practical point is that the Auto-Owners name covers several companies, and the one on your policy depends on the state and the risk. The Concord and Capital companies sell under their own names in their regions.

All lines of business; the report does not separate personal auto. Auto-Owners web pages give 48,000 licensed agents, a lower figure than the annual report; we use the annual report.

The report pairs rising premium with a falling policy count, and the chairman's letter describes the 1.7% decline as reflecting a more competitive market and a focus on keeping a profitable book.

Buying only through an independent agent

Auto-Owners states on its own site that it offers insurance through independent agents, and its annual report thanks its independent agency partners for the year's business. Its pages send quote requests to a local agent rather than to an online checkout. That has two effects on a quote. First, the agent is your only route to an Auto-Owners price, so availability depends on whether an agency near you holds an appointment. Second, the same agent can usually quote other insurers, which makes it straightforward to price an identical specification side by side. The quote worksheet is set up for that comparison.

Complaint readings for Auto-Owners and Owners Insurance

Colorado prints a separate line for each company. In 2025, Owners Insurance Company, the larger of the two there with $30.75 million of auto premium, drew 13 complaints, 2 confirmed, for an index of 1.68; Colorado's index weighs complaint share against premium share, with protests counted. Auto-Owners Insurance Company wrote only $5.70 million and had 8 complaints, none confirmed, for 5.59. Colorado's report itself cautions that thin premium makes the index swing, and the parent's own history shows it: 0.90 in 2022, 1.88 in 2023, 0.51 in 2024 and 5.59 in 2025 on premium between $5.6 million and $7.5 million a year.

Illinois uses complaints per $1 million of earned premium. Auto Owners Insurance Company had 14 auto complaints on $76.6 million in 2025, a rate of 0.1828 against the all-company mean of 0.2657. Auto-Owners does not appear in the Texas or New York auto datasets we read. Rules for each state are on our Colorado and Illinois pages.

Auto-Owners questions

Can I buy Auto-Owners car insurance online?

No. Auto-Owners sells through independent agents, and its site directs buyers to find an agent for a quote. The annual report puts the network at about 50,000 agents in 26 states. Because the agency is independent rather than captive, the same office may be able to price your car with other insurers too, using one set of limits.

Why does my policy say Owners Insurance Company instead of Auto-Owners?

Auto-Owners Insurance Group includes Home-Owners, Owners, Property-Owners and Southern-Owners Insurance Companies alongside the parent. Which one issues a policy depends on the state and underwriting. In Colorado's 2025 data, Owners Insurance Company carried $30.75 million of auto premium against $5.70 million for Auto-Owners Insurance Company. Each has its own NAIC code and complaint record.

How large is Auto-Owners?

The 2025 annual report shows net written premium of $15.06 billion for Auto-Owners Insurance Company and $16.83 billion for the whole group, which also holds more than $18.2 billion of policyholder surplus and $44.68 billion of combined assets. Those figures span every line the group writes, from auto and home to business and life.

What does a Colorado complaint index of 5.59 mean for Auto-Owners?

It means the parent company's share of Colorado auto complaints in 2025 was about 5.6 times its share of premium. The figure rests on 8 complaints, none confirmed by the Division, against $5.70 million of premium. A year earlier the same company read 0.51. Colorado warns that small premium bases make the index unstable.

Is Concord or Capital Insurance Group the same as Auto-Owners?

They are affiliates, not the parent. The annual report says Concord General Mutual and its companies write in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, and Capital Insurance Group writes in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. A policy from them carries their company name, with its own complaint record in state data.
