INSURANCE COMPANIES
Allstate auto insurance profile
Allstate Insurance Company, part of The Allstate Corporation. Quotes online, by phone and through local Allstate agents.
Allstate sells personal auto insurance online and through agents, and it is the one company in this directory that publishes two distinct driving-priced products side by side: Drivewise, a behavior program on a standard policy, and Milewise, a pay-per-mile policy aimed at people who drive little. If your household has a second car that mostly sits, quote it both ways, on a standard policy and on the per-mile basis, and compare the totals over a realistic mileage estimate rather than your lowest-mileage month.

Programs Allstate advertises
Drivewise
Allstate's usage-based program in its mobile app. Allstate states it tracks driving behavior such as braking, speed, phone activity and time of day, that drivers save for participating, and that a personalized rate based on the prior 12 months of driving applies at renewal. Allstate states the rate can increase with high-risk driving and that Drivewise is not available in every state.
Milewise
Allstate's pay-per-mile policy for low-mileage drivers, priced as a daily base rate plus a per-mile rate. Allstate states availability varies by state.
What to ask when you quote Allstate
Ask for the same car priced three ways where available: standard policy, standard policy with Drivewise, and Milewise at your real annual mileage. Ask what each option does at renewal if your mileage or driving score changes.
Allstate auto policies are not issued by one company. The Allstate Corporation, a public holding company, owns several Illinois-organized insurers, and in Colorado, Illinois, Texas and New York the largest auto book sits with Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 29688), not with Allstate Insurance Company (NAIC 19232). The 2025 Form 10-K reports $38,649 million of auto premiums written and 25.504 million auto policies in force at December 31, 2025.
That split matters when you look up complaint data: each state reports each legal entity separately, and the figures below keep them apart.
Which Allstate company is on the declarations page
Allstate's Exhibit 21 subsidiary list for the 2025 10-K places Allstate Insurance Company, Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, Allstate Indemnity Company, Allstate Property and Casualty Insurance Company and Allstate North American Insurance Company in Illinois. The same list shows Allstate County Mutual Insurance Company in Texas and four Integon companies organized in North Carolina. The 10-K names the brands sold under Allstate Protection as Allstate, National General, Direct Auto and Answer Financial.
The 10-K also notes that Allstate Insurance Company is regulated as an insurer in Illinois and that Illinois law limits the dividends it can pass up to the parent. State regulators therefore track each of these companies, with its own NAIC code, rather than a single Allstate account. Before you file a complaint or compare records, read the insurer name on your declarations page.
Auto business in the 2025 Form 10-K
| Measure | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto premiums written ($ millions) | 33,958 | 37,296 | 38,649 |
| Auto premiums earned ($ millions) | 32,940 | 36,475 | 38,090 |
| Auto policies in force (thousands) | 25,283 | 24,936 | 25,504 |
| New issued auto applications (thousands) | 5,915 | 7,102 | 8,902 |
Premiums written is the amount charged for policies issued in the period, as the 10-K defines it. These are company totals, not prices for any driver.
Written premium rose 3.6% in 2025. The filing attributes the increase to rate increases of 3.5% taken during the year, which it says had a total premium effect of 2.6%, and to 568,000 more policies in force. New applications grew in all three channels: 3.129 million through exclusive agents, 2.786 million through independent agents and 2.987 million direct.
How Allstate distributes auto policies
- Exclusive agency: over 27,400 Allstate exclusive agents and licensed sales professionals in the U.S. (2025 10-K).
- Independent agency: about 58,700 independent agent locations in the U.S.
- Direct: about 2,200 contact-center sales representatives plus online sales, and Direct Auto products through employees in about 500 retail stores.
The channel decides which company and product you are quoted. Two Allstate-family quotes for the same car can come from different legal entities with different rate filings, so ask the seller to name the underwriting company on the quote. Our rate filing guide explains how to read a filing once you know the company.
State complaint records, by legal entity
Four states publish auto complaint figures we could read for 2024 or 2025. Each uses a different yardstick, so compare an entity only with other companies in the same state table, never across states.

Colorado DOI warns that small differences between companies should not be read as meaningful. Figures were read Oct. 22, 2026.
One pattern stands out. In Colorado the larger Allstate Fire and Casualty book scored under 1.00 in both 2024 (0.81) and 2025 (0.84), while the much smaller Allstate Insurance Company book sat above 1.00 in each year from 2021 to 2025 on the Colorado detail report. In New York, Allstate Insurance Company also shows the higher ratio of the two. Colorado's own coverage rules are on our Colorado rates page.
Allstate questions
Is Allstate Insurance Company the company that insures my car?
Not necessarily. Allstate's 10-K subsidiary list includes several Illinois-organized auto writers, and state data show Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company carrying the larger auto book in Colorado, Illinois, Texas and New York. Your declarations page names the actual insurer and its policy number. Use that exact name when you contact a regulator or check complaint records.
How many auto policies did Allstate have at the end of 2025?
The 2025 Form 10-K reports 25.504 million auto policies in force at December 31, 2025, up 2.3% from 24.936 million a year earlier. That count covers the Allstate Protection segment, which includes the Allstate, National General and Direct Auto brands, so it is broader than policies sold under the Allstate name alone.
Why does National General show up next to Allstate?
The 10-K lists National General as one of the brands in the Allstate Protection segment, next to Allstate, Direct Auto and Answer Financial, and says the segment sells through exclusive agents, independent agents, contact centers and online. A National General policy is part of the Allstate group, yet the underwriting company on it is reported under its own name and NAIC code in state complaint tables.
What does a Colorado complaint index of 0.84 mean for Allstate Fire and Casualty?
Colorado divides a company's share of the state's auto complaints by its share of auto premium. A reading of 0.84 in 2025 means the company drew a slightly smaller share of complaints than its share of premium. Colorado counts rate-increase and nonrenewal protests as complaints, and it cautions against reading small gaps between companies as meaningful.
Where do I complain about an Allstate claim?
Start with the insurer's claim and complaint channels. If that fails, file with the insurance department in the state where the policy was issued, giving the underwriting company named on your declarations page. Our claim filing guide lists the records to keep. A licensed attorney or the regulator can advise on your own dispute.
