American Family auto insurance profile

American Family Insurance, including American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I.. Quotes online and through American Family agents.

American Family sells personal auto insurance online and through its own agents in the states where it operates. Its coverage pages separate the policy into three plain groups: coverage for your car (collision and comprehensive), liability and injury coverage (bodily injury liability, medical expense and personal injury protection), and add-ons such as emergency roadside assistance, rental reimbursement and lease or loan gap coverage. That grouping is a useful template for your own quote specification, whichever company you end up comparing.

What to ask when you quote American Family

Ask which add-ons are bundled into the quoted price and which are priced separately, and ask how DriveMyWay treats occasional drivers on the policy, such as a college student who drives only in summer. If you drive little, ask for a MilesMyWay price at your real annual mileage.

American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I. (NAIC 19275), based at 6000 American Parkway in Madison, Wisconsin, heads a group whose 2025 annual report shows $17,180 million of property and casualty premiums earned, down from $17,697 million in 2024 after the group sold The General. In the state complaint tables we read, though, the larger auto book usually belongs to a subsidiary, American Family Insurance Company (NAIC 10386), not to the mutual itself.

From Farmers Mutual Automobile to a multi-brand group

American Family's history page starts on October 3, 1927, when Herman Wittwer launched Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Madison. After several mergers and renamings, the company took its current name, American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., in 1963.

The group then grew by acquisition. The same timeline records The General (the Permanent General Companies of Nashville) joining in 2012, Homesite in 2013, policyholder approval of a merger with The Main Street America Group in 2018, and Ameriprise Auto & Home joining in 2019 and being renamed CONNECT, Powered by American Family Insurance. In 2024 American Family announced the sale of The General to Sentry Insurance. The 2025 annual report states that The General was deconsolidated as of its December 31, 2024 sale date, which is why group premium fell in 2025.

Group totals for all property and casualty lines and brands, published by American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I. and its insurance company subsidiaries. The report does not break out auto.

Because 2024 still includes The General's results through the sale date, the year-over-year drop in earned premium is not a like-for-like measure of the remaining auto business. Net income attributable to the group rose to .18 billion in 2025 from .53 billion, and members' equity reached 4.28 billion at year-end.

Which American Family company writes the auto policy

American Family's car insurance page says it serves customers across 19 states and offers two ways to buy: an online quote, or a quote through one of its agents. The CONNECT companies appear separately in Texas and New York complaint data, under their own names. Read the company name on your declarations page before you look up a record. Similar-sounding names in state tables are not always part of this group, so match the NAIC code as well as the name.

American Family questions

Is American Family a mutual company?

Yes. The parent is American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., and its annual report reports members' equity rather than shareholders' equity. The group includes subsidiaries such as American Family Insurance Company and the CONNECT companies. Your auto policy may be issued by the mutual or by one of those subsidiaries, and the declarations page names which.

Does American Family still own The General?

No. American Family's history page records that it announced the sale of The General to Sentry Insurance in 2024, and the 2025 annual report says The General was deconsolidated as of the December 31, 2024 sale date. A policy issued by The General's companies is no longer part of the American Family group.

What is CONNECT, Powered by American Family Insurance?

It is the brand American Family gave to Ameriprise Auto & Home after bringing that business into its portfolio in 2019, per its history page. State data list the related companies as American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company and American Family Connect Insurance Company. They appear in states such as Texas and New York.

How many states does American Family sell car insurance in?

Its car insurance page says it serves customers across 19 states, where it sells online and through its own agents. That count describes the core American Family brand. Other companies in the group, such as the CONNECT insurers, are reported separately in state data, so check the specific company and product offered at your address.

Why did American Family premiums fall in 2025?

Group property and casualty premiums earned fell from $17.70 billion in 2024 to $17.18 billion in 2025. The annual report explains that The General was deconsolidated at its December 31, 2024 sale date, while its 2024 results through the sale date remain in the income statement. The comparison therefore mixes a sold business with the continuing one.
