Nationwide auto insurance profile

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. Quotes online and through independent agents.

Nationwide sells personal auto insurance online and through independent agents, and it runs the widest set of driving-priced options in this directory: SmartRide for behavior, SmartMiles for low mileage, and a Vanishing Deductible option that reduces the deductible over claim-free years. Each option changes what a quote means, so record which programs a Nationwide quote assumes before you compare it with a standard quote from another company.

Programs Nationwide advertises

SmartRide

Nationwide's driving program. Nationwide states that drivers receive a discount for enrolling and can earn a larger discount at renewal based on how they drive.

SmartMiles

Nationwide's pay-per-mile insurance for low-mileage drivers, priced as a base premium plus a per-mile rate. Nationwide publishes a list of states where SmartMiles is not sold.

Vanishing Deductible

A Nationwide option under which the deductible shrinks for years of safe driving, on the terms Nationwide publishes.

Eligibility limits

Nationwide states that its products and discounts are not available to all persons in all states, and it publishes state exclusions for SmartMiles in particular: SmartMiles is not sold in Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, New York or Oklahoma. Confirm both the policy and the program are sold in your state before quoting.

What to ask when you quote Nationwide

Ask for your price with and without SmartRide, and, if you drive little, a SmartMiles price at your real annual mileage. Ask what the Vanishing Deductible costs per term and how a claim resets it.

Nationwide auto policies are underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and its affiliated companies, with the home office at One Nationwide Plaza in Columbus, Ohio. Nationwide Mutual files in NAIC group 0140 under company code 23787. Nationwide's own disclosure adds a caution: not all of its affiliated companies are mutual companies, and not all Nationwide members are insured by a mutual company.

So the brand on the ad and the insurer on the policy can differ. This page lists which Nationwide companies show up in state auto complaint data, with dated readings, and what the 2025 annual report says.

A mutual parent with stock affiliates

Nationwide traces its start to 1926, when a group of Ohio farmers organized to get a fair price on auto insurance; its annual report says the first claim, $25 for a stolen tire, rim, tube and spotlight, was paid on May 12, 1926. Today it calls itself a "modern mutual" and lists dozens of affiliates.

Its affiliated companies page names, among property and casualty insurers, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Nationwide General Insurance Company, Nationwide Property and Casualty Insurance Company, Nationwide Insurance Company of America, Nationwide Affinity Insurance Company of America, ALLIED Property and Casualty Insurance Company, AMCO Insurance Company, Depositors Insurance Company, Crestbrook Insurance Company, Titan Insurance Company, Victoria Fire & Casualty Company and the Harleysville companies. The declarations page on a Nationwide policy names the specific affiliate that issued it.

How Nationwide auto reaches buyers

Nationwide's auto page links to an online quote flow at getaquote.nationwide.com and to an agent locator, and its agent site is built for independent insurance agents, with a published Personal Lines appetite that tells agents which risks Nationwide wants to write. The nationwide.com footer adds that products and discounts are not available to all persons in all states and that coverage is subject to underwriting guidelines, review and approval. Whichever route a quote comes through, note the issuing company it names before comparing price.

Group results from the 2025 annual report

Nationwide's 2025 annual report gives company-wide figures, not an auto line. It reports total sales of $73.2 billion, up 7%, net operating income of $4.3 billion, up 37%, total adjusted capital of $32.8 billion and total assets of $359.8 billion at December 31, 2025. Those totals include life insurance, annuities, retirement plans and commercial lines, so they say little about the price of a personal auto policy. The report's products page lists automobile, homeowners and umbrella under Personal Lines.

Colorado complaint index for four Nationwide insurers

Colorado divides each auto insurer's share of complaints by its share of premium, which puts the state average at 1.00; premium increase and nonrenewal protests are counted as complaints. Four Nationwide companies appear, each with a modest Colorado book, so a single complaint moves the index noticeably.

Colorado DOI standard auto reports; 2025 complaint counts were 3, 2 and 1.

Colorado premium for all three listed companies shrank between 2023 and 2025. Nationwide Property and Casualty went from $68.11 million to $30.41 million, and Nationwide Mutual from $30.23 million to $18.62 million.

California and New Jersey readings

California's composite measures justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures. Nationwide Insurance Company of America, with about 218,252 exposures in 2025, read 0.5 on one justified complaint, after 3.0 in 2024 and 2.3 in 2023 on 8 and 7 complaints.

New Jersey publishes group data. The Nationwide Group insured 19,353 vehicles there at the end of 2024, a small book, and had 3 valid complaints: a ratio of 0.1550 per 1,000 autos and an index of 2.967. In 2023 the group had 1 valid complaint over 22,825 vehicles, an index of 0.990. With a book this size, one or two complaints swing the index widely.

Nationwide questions

Is my Nationwide auto policy written by a mutual company?

Not necessarily. Nationwide's own disclosure says products are underwritten by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and affiliated companies, that not all affiliates are mutual companies, and that not all Nationwide members are insured by a mutual company. Check the insurer name on your declarations page; it may be Nationwide Mutual, Nationwide General, Nationwide Property and Casualty, ALLIED, or another affiliate.

What NAIC codes identify Nationwide auto insurers?

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company carries NAIC company code 23787 in NAIC group 0140, per its 2025 statutory statement posted by the Ohio Department of Insurance. Colorado's complaint report lists Nationwide General at 23760, Nationwide Property and Casualty at 37877 and Nationwide Insurance Company of America at 25453. Use the code to find the right record in a state database.

Why is the New Jersey index for Nationwide high when Colorado figures are low?

New Jersey reports the whole Nationwide Group per 1,000 insured autos, and the group insured only 19,353 vehicles there in 2024, so 3 valid complaints produced an index of 2.967. Colorado scores each company against premium and counted just 1 to 3 complaints per company in 2025. Small samples in both states make single-year readings unstable.

Does the 2025 annual report show how Nationwide auto is performing?

Not directly. The annual report web pages give totals for the whole company, including $73.2 billion of sales and $4.3 billion of net operating income in 2025, without separating personal auto. For auto-specific pricing in your state, look up Nationwide's rate filings with the regulator; the SERFF rate filing guide shows how.

Who do I contact about a Nationwide claim dispute?

Start with Nationwide's claim staff and its Office of Customer Relations, which its about page lists for questions about quotes and accounts. If the dispute stays open, file with the insurance department in your state and name the exact affiliate on your declarations page, such as Nationwide General Insurance Company, so the complaint is recorded against the right insurer.
