RATES BY AGE
Car insurance rates by age, benchmarked honestly
Age changes what you should expect to pay, but the official data behind this site does not publish an age price, and we will not invent one. These pages explain, for each age band, the direction you should expect relative to your state published average, the factors behind it, and the moves that actually lower a real premium inside that band.
Estimates and published averages, not a quote. Not insurance advice. Your actual premium will differ.
Teen driver, around 18
Typically well above the state average benchmark. Insurers price inexperience and higher crash involvement for young drivers. The NAIC supplement used for the state index does not publish an age split, so ClearCarRates does not invent a teen dollar figure. Use the state combined benchmark as a floor for budgeting, then get real quotes.
Driver age 21
Typically above the state average benchmark, lower than teen years. Rates usually ease as a driver gains licensed years, but a 21 year old still has a short record. The NAIC supplement does not publish an age split, so no age specific dollar figure is shown.
Driver age 25
Often closer to the state average benchmark. By the mid twenties many drivers have several years of history. Clean records tend to move closer to the published state average, while tickets, claims and city garaging can keep a driver well above it.
Senior driver, around 65
Often near or below the state average benchmark for clean records, varies widely. Experienced drivers with clean records and lower annual mileage often sit near or below the state average. Health, mileage, vehicle and claims history matter more than age alone at this stage.
The anchor every age band shares
Countrywide, the NAIC 2023 combined average premium was $1,438 per insured vehicle, with average expenditure of $1,282 and a liability average premium of $737. Your state figure from the rate index is the anchor. The age band tells you which side of that anchor to expect, and roughly how firmly. A teen in a low cost state can still pay more than an experienced driver in an expensive state, because the state anchor and the age direction stack. That is why the Car Rate Checker asks for state, age band and coverage level together.
What actually moves price inside a band
Licensed years, continuous coverage, claims and tickets, the car insured, and policy structure matter more than the birthday itself. The good-student discount guide covers the discount most often available to younger drivers and how to document it. The coverage split guide and the deductible guide cover the two levers families reach for when an age band price lands high, and how to use them without quietly removing the protection the policy exists for.
Read the methodology for what the NAIC supplement does and does not publish, and why no page on this site shows an age specific premium.
