Erie Insurance auto insurance profile

Erie Insurance Group, including Erie Insurance Exchange. Quotes through local Erie agents.

Erie Insurance sells personal auto insurance through local agents in its operating states, and it builds features into its auto policy that other companies in this directory sell as separate shopping decisions, including transportation expense cover with comprehensive in most states on its published terms, pet injury coverage and personal item coverage. Its Rate Lock feature is the headline difference: it trades the usual renewal-price movement for stability until you change the policy. Compare an Erie quote on coverage content as carefully as on price, because the included extras change what the number covers.

Programs Erie Insurance advertises

ERIE Rate Lock

An Erie feature Erie describes as holding your premium the same year after year, even after a claim, until you make changes such as adding or removing a vehicle or driver or changing your primary residence. Erie states it is not available in all states.

ERIE Auto Plus

An endorsement Erie describes as adding features including a diminishing deductible, which falls for each consecutive claim-free policy year up to a maximum reduction Erie publishes.

YourTurn

Erie's app-based driving program, which Erie describes as scoring driving and paying rewards for safe driving. Erie states it is not available in all states or all programs, and lists Kentucky, New York, North Carolina and Washington, DC among the places where it is not available.

Eligibility limits

Erie sells through local agents in the states where it operates, which do not cover the whole country. If Erie does not write in your state, it cannot quote you; its site will say so.

What to ask when you quote Erie Insurance

Ask the agent to list everything included in the base Erie quote that rival quotes charge extra for, and to explain exactly which policy changes would end a Rate Lock and reprice the policy.

Erie auto policies are written by Erie Insurance Exchange (NAIC 26271), a Pennsylvania-domiciled reciprocal insurer whose policyholders are its subscribers, or by one of the Exchange's own insurance subsidiaries. The public company, Erie Indemnity Company, does not issue the policies. It is the attorney-in-fact that runs the Exchange for a management fee, set at 25% of the Exchange's premiums written for 2025 and again for 2026, per its 2025 Form 10-K.

Reciprocal exchange, attorney-in-fact and subsidiaries

The 10-K describes Erie Indemnity as a publicly held Pennsylvania business corporation that has served as attorney-in-fact for the Exchange's subscribers since its incorporation in 1925, the same year the Exchange began business. Indemnity issues and renews policies on the subscribers' behalf and also provides claims handling and investment management services. Its management fee may not exceed 25% of the Exchange's direct and affiliated assumed premiums written, and Indemnity's board sets the rate at least once a year.

For a policyholder, this means the insurer of record is the Exchange or one of four property and casualty subsidiaries the Exchange owns outright: Erie Insurance Company, Erie Insurance Company of New York, Erie Insurance Property & Casualty Company and Flagship City Insurance Company. The 10-K says Indemnity's earnings are driven mainly by that management fee, so Indemnity's revenue moves with the Exchange's premium volume.

Where each Erie company is licensed

Erie's States of Operation page lists every affiliate's NAIC number and licensing jurisdictions. The Exchange is licensed in the District of Columbia and 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. New York is reached through Erie Insurance Company (NAIC 26263) and Erie Insurance Company of New York (NAIC 16233), the latter with a home office in Rochester. That puts Erie's licensed footprint at 12 states plus DC.

What the 2025 filing says about premium and policies

The Exchange's direct and affiliated assumed premiums written rose 8.9% to $13.0 billion in 2025 from $11.9 billion in 2024. Personal lines, led by private passenger auto and homeowners, made up 71% of that and grew 8.3% to $9.2 billion. The growth came from price rather than count: personal lines average premium per policy rose 9.4% while personal lines policies in force fell 1.5%. New business premium across all lines dropped 17.8% to $1.5 billion as new business policies written fell 22.8%.

Two structural details explain why Erie price changes reach customers slowly. The Exchange writes almost all policies on annual terms, so a rate action takes 12 months to be reflected in written premium and another 12 months to be fully earned. The 10-K also notes that certain personal auto policies carry a rate-locking feature, which further delays when approved rate changes show up in those policies.

Erie sells only through independent agencies, which the 10-K calls the Exchange's sole distribution channel and describes as also handling underwriting and service work.

Colorado and Texas are not on Erie's licensing list, and no Erie company appears in their auto reports. Read Oct. 22, 2026.

In Illinois the Exchange's rate of complaints per premium dollar came in at roughly half the all-company mean. In New York, the two Erie companies show different ratios on similar premium, which is worth knowing if your New York policy names Erie Insurance Company rather than the New York subsidiary. State rules are on our Illinois and New York pages.

Erie Insurance questions

Who owns Erie Insurance?

Two answers apply. Erie Insurance Exchange, which issues policies alongside its four insurance subsidiaries, is a reciprocal insurer whose subscribers are its policyholders. Erie Indemnity Company is a separate, publicly held Pennsylvania corporation that manages the Exchange as attorney-in-fact and earns a fee on Exchange premiums. The 10-K lists the Exchange's insurance subsidiaries as wholly owned by the Exchange, not by Indemnity.

How much does Erie Indemnity take from policyholder premiums?

Under the subscriber's agreement, the management fee can be up to 25% of the Exchange's direct and affiliated assumed premiums written. The 10-K reports that Indemnity's board set the rate at 25% for 2024 and 2025 and again at 25% for 2026. The fee covers policy issuance, renewal and related services, and it is built into what subscribers pay.

Which states can buy Erie auto insurance?

Erie's licensing list covers the District of Columbia plus Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. New York policies come from Erie Insurance Company or Erie Insurance Company of New York, not from the Exchange. Availability also depends on whether an appointed independent agent serves your area.

Why might an Erie price change take longer to show up?

The 10-K explains that the Exchange writes nearly all policies with annual terms, so an approved rate change reaches each policy only at its next renewal and takes a further year to be fully earned. Some personal auto policies also carry a rate-locking feature, which extends that lag. Ask your agent when any filed change applies to your renewal.

Where do I send a complaint about an Erie auto claim?

Raise it with your agent and Erie first, then with the insurance department in the state where the policy was issued. Name the writing company exactly as it appears on the declarations page, for example Erie Insurance Exchange or Erie Insurance Company of New York. Our claim guide lists the records worth keeping.
