Farmers auto insurance profile

Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, including Farmers Insurance Exchange. Quotes online to start, and through local Farmers agents.

Farmers sells personal auto insurance through local agents, with online quoting as the entry point, and publishes state-by-state coverage and discount lists rather than one national list, because its offerings vary by state. Its own state pages name options such as rental or rental alternative coverage, vehicle replacement cover for newer cars, and enhanced roadside and ride assistance. Read your own state's Farmers page before the agent call, so you know which options exist where you live and can ask about them by name.

Signal

Farmers' app-based driving program, which monitors driving behavior such as braking habits and phone use. Farmers states it is available only with certain Farmers and Foremost policies, including Smart Plan auto policies, that it is not available in Florida, Hawaii, New York or South Carolina, and that the Signal discount is not available in California. At renewal, safe driving can save money and riskier driving can raise the premium.

Eligibility limits

Farmers does not sell auto insurance in every state. Its state pages list where it writes; check your state on farmers.com before spending time on a quote.

What to ask when you quote Farmers

Ask the agent which of the options on your state's Farmers page are in the quote, which were left out, and whether your policy form can use Signal at all in your state before any driving score exists.

Farmers auto policies are written by the Farmers Exchanges, three California-domiciled interinsurance exchanges owned by their policyholders, or by their subsidiaries and affiliates. Zurich Insurance Group states in its 2025 annual report that it has no ownership interest in the Exchanges; its subsidiary Farmers Group, Inc. manages them as attorney-in-fact for a fee. Zurich reports the Exchanges' 2025 gross written premiums at $29,600 million, up 4%.

Three exchanges and a manager

Zurich's annual report defines the Farmers Exchanges as Farmers Insurance Exchange (NAIC 21652), Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange, together with their subsidiaries and affiliates. Each exchange has a Board of Governors. Farmers' own Our Companies page adds that the three are organized under California law, and that the Exchanges and Farmers Group, Inc. hold no ownership interest in each other.

Farmers Group, Inc. (FGI), wholly owned by Zurich, and certain of its subsidiaries are the appointed attorneys-in-fact. Zurich's report says policyholders permit FGI to take a management fee of up to 20% of the Exchanges' gross earned premium, or up to 25% for Fire Insurance Exchange, with an agreed margin cap of 7%. FGI provides non-claims and ancillary services; it is not the insurer on the policy.

202529,60028,854

All lines written by the Exchanges and their subsidiaries, not auto alone. Zurich notes the figures are proprietary to the Exchanges and are shown to explain FGI performance.

Zurich adds two operating facts for 2025: the Exchanges posted a net increase of more than 150,000 policies, the first net gain in 10 years, and a combined ratio of 84.6%, an improvement of 6.8 points. Zurich credits premium growth to higher new business volumes and better retention.

Brands that sell Farmers-group auto coverage

Farmers' about page says the group serves households and businesses across all 50 states and DC through Farmers exclusive agencies, tens of thousands of independent agents, and direct online and call-center sales. Its companies page lists several auto brands with different targets:

The all-states claim describes the group across its brands, not any single brand: 21st Century, for example, is described as selling direct to consumers in California. If an agent quotes you through Bristol West or Foremost, that is still a Farmers-group policy, but a different insurer with its own rates and complaint record.

Colorado's multi-year detail reports show a shift inside the group. Farmers Insurance Exchange's Colorado auto premium fell every year, from $241.37 million in 2021 to $152.34 million in 2025, while Bristol West's rose from $77.70 million in 2022 to $206.24 million in 2025. By 2025 the non-standard brand wrote more Colorado auto premium than the flagship exchange. Its index also improved, from 2.29 in 2022 to 0.95 in 2025. Farmers questions

Does Zurich own Farmers Insurance?

Zurich owns Farmers Group, Inc., the management company, but its 2025 annual report states that it has no ownership interest in the Farmers Exchanges. The Exchanges, which issue the insurance, are owned by their policyholders. FGI acts as their attorney-in-fact and earns fees for non-claims and ancillary services.

What are the three Farmers Exchanges?

Farmers Insurance Exchange, Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange. Zurich and Farmers both describe them as interinsurance exchanges organized under California law and owned by their policyholders, each overseen by a Board of Governors. Together with their subsidiaries and affiliates, they make up the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies.

How is Farmers Group paid for managing the Exchanges?

Zurich's report says FGI may receive a management fee of up to 20% of the Exchanges' gross earned premium, or up to 25% for Fire Insurance Exchange, subject to an agreed margin cap of 7%, measured as FGI's gross management result over the Exchanges' gross earned premium. The fee is Farmers Group's primary source of revenue.

Is a Bristol West policy a Farmers policy?

It is part of the same group, but a different insurer. Farmers' companies page describes Bristol West as writing non-standard private passenger auto, and Colorado's complaint report tags Bristol West Insurance Company as Farmers. Its rates, underwriting and complaint figures are reported separately from Farmers Insurance Exchange, so compare it as its own quote.

Can I buy Farmers auto insurance in my state?

Farmers says the group serves all 50 states and DC through several brands, and those brands have different reach; 21st Century, for one, is described as selling direct to consumers in California. Check your state's page on farmers.com, or ask an agent which Farmers-group company would issue your policy. The quote comparison guide explains how to match limits across brands.
