INSURANCE COMPANIES
The Hartford auto insurance profile
Hartford Fire Insurance Company and its affiliates, part of The Hartford. Quotes online and by phone, direct from the company, through the AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford.
The Hartford sells personal auto insurance through the AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford, a program it describes as the only national auto insurance program endorsed by AARP and one it has offered to AARP members since 1984. That structure narrows who can buy before price is discussed: the buyer must be an AARP member aged 50 or older in most states. For eligible households, the published coverage set is standard, and the differences sit in program benefits tied to a clean record, including Accident Forgiveness, a Disappearing Deductible and RecoverCare help with home services after an injury.

Programs The Hartford advertises
AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford
The Hartford's auto program for AARP members, which The Hartford describes as the only national auto insurance program endorsed by AARP, offered since 1984. AARP does not underwrite the insurance; The Hartford is the provider and administers the policy, subject to program eligibility and availability.
TrueLane
The Hartford's app-based driving program. The Hartford states the app collects data on braking, speeding and phone distraction, that a policy must be enrolled within 60 days of its initial effective date, that the renewal price is based on demonstrated driving habits, and that riskier habits may result in a higher premium. Not available in all states.
Accident Forgiveness
A Hartford benefit that excuses a first accident claim when all drivers on the policy have a clean driving record and are accident-free for five straight years with The Hartford. The Hartford states this benefit is not available to California policyholders.
Disappearing Deductible
An optional Hartford benefit that reduces the collision deductible over time as long as the driver maintains a clean driving record. The Hartford states this benefit is not available to California policyholders.
RecoverCare
A Hartford benefit that helps pay for home services, such as house cleaning, if the policyholder is injured in an accident and cannot do them. The Hartford states availability and benefit levels vary by state.
Eligibility limits
You must be an AARP member and at least 50 years old to purchase a policy through the AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford. The Hartford states AARP membership is required for program eligibility in most states, that it can help a non-member sign up when buying, and that a spouse or children under 50 can be added to the policy. Coverage is not available in all states, and the program is currently unavailable in Canada and U.S. territories or possessions. If you are under 50, this program cannot quote you as the buyer.
What to ask when you quote The Hartford
Ask The Hartford to confirm, before quoting, that you meet the program rules: AARP membership and age 50 or older for the buyer, and that the program is sold in your state. Ask which drivers under 50 in your household can be added, how Accident Forgiveness and the Disappearing Deductible are earned and whether they apply in your state, and what the same policy costs with and without TrueLane enrollment, including what a poor TrueLane result would do at renewal.
The Hartford's personal auto line is a book with a falling policy count, written by subsidiaries organized mainly in Connecticut and Indiana of The Hartford Insurance Group, Inc. Its 2025 Form 10-K shows $2,444 million of personal auto written premium and 1.054 million auto policies in force at year-end 2025, down from 1.257 million at the end of 2023, while renewal written prices rose 12.8% in 2025 after 22.1% in 2024.
The filing ties most Personal Insurance written premium, auto and homeowners together, to an exclusive licensing agreement with AARP that it says is effective through December 31, 2032.

| Earned premiums ($ millions) | 2,134 | 2,401 | 2,505 |
| Policies in force, end of period (thousands) | 1,257 | 1,171 | 1,054 |
| New business written premium ($ millions) | 224 | 314 | 285 |
| Effective policy count retention | 83% | 79% | 79% |
| Renewal written price increase | 16.3% | 22.1% | 12.8% |
Company-wide totals for the automobile product line in the Personal Insurance segment. Not a price for any driver.
Read together, these rows explain the shape of the book. Premium held near $2.4 billion in 2024 and 2025 while the policy count fell by about 117,000 in 2025, because each remaining policy carried a higher price. The filing puts effective policy count retention at 79% in both 2024 and 2025, down from 83% in 2023.
The AARP agreement and the Prevail platform
The 10-K describes Personal Insurance as selling auto, homeowners and umbrella coverage across the United States, mostly through a program designed for AARP members. Business sold to AARP members, either direct or through independent agents, produced earned premiums of $3.4 billion in 2025, $3.2 billion in 2024 and $2.9 billion in 2023; those totals include homeowners as well as auto.
The filing says most Personal Insurance written premium is tied to the exclusive AARP licensing agreement, which runs through December 31, 2032. It also reports a new cloud-based product and platform called Prevail, which it says is now in market in nearly all states. Prevail began reaching the agency channel in mid-2025, with 30 state launches planned by early 2027. The filing says rate levels, rating factors and underwriting procedures are being updated through Prevail, so a renewal priced on the new platform may not match a prior-year quote line for line.

Each state uses its own formula. Compare an entity only with other companies in the same state table.
Colorado's detail report shows Hartford Insurance Company of the Southeast growing from $3.17 million of auto premium in 2022 to $20.79 million in 2025 as Twin City Fire fell from $36.58 million in 2021 to $22.65 million. That looks like business moving between affiliates, and it means a single company's history in one state can reflect a changing book. Hartford Casualty's 5.14 rests on five complaints against under $4 million of premium; Colorado itself warns that small bases make the index swing. See our Colorado and Texas pages for state rules.
The Hartford questions
Who owns the insurer behind the AARP auto program?
The insurers are subsidiaries of The Hartford Insurance Group, Inc., the public company that files the 10-K with the SEC. AARP licenses its name to the program under an exclusive agreement the 10-K says runs through December 31, 2032. The policy itself is issued by a Hartford company such as Hartford Fire Insurance Company or Hartford Insurance Company of the Southeast.
Why did The Hartford have fewer auto policies in 2025?
The 10-K shows auto policies in force falling from 1.171 million to 1.054 million during 2025, with retention at 79% and renewal written prices up 12.8%. The filing reports the numbers rather than one cause. Higher renewal prices and lower new business premium, $285 million against $314 million in 2024, are both in the table.
Is the AARP program the only way The Hartford sells car insurance?
No. The 10-K says business sold to AARP members comes in either direct or through independent agents, and that Prevail started reaching the agency channel in mid-2025. The AARP program accounts for most Personal Insurance written premium, so most Hartford auto customers buy through it, but agency-sold policies exist in some states.
What is Prevail and does it change my renewal?
Prevail is the cloud-based product and platform The Hartford describes in its 2025 10-K. The filing says overall rate levels, price segmentation, rating factors and underwriting procedures are being updated through it. A policy moved to Prevail could be rated differently from the prior form. Ask for a written comparison at renewal and check the quote worksheet against the old declarations.
How should I read a Colorado index of 5.14 for Hartford Casualty?
With caution. The 2025 figure comes from five complaints, none confirmed, against $3.88 million of auto premium. Colorado's report states that indexes based on small premium amounts can be highly variable and that small differences between companies are not meaningful. A larger Hartford writer in the same table, Twin City Fire, read 1.06.
