INSURANCE COMPANIES
GEICO auto insurance profile
Government Employees Insurance Company, part of the GEICO group of companies. Quotes online, by phone, in the mobile app and through local GEICO agents.
GEICO sells personal auto insurance online, by phone, in its mobile app and through local agents, and its own pages walk through the standard coverage set line by line: liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, with add-ons such as emergency roadside service, rental reimbursement and mechanical breakdown insurance. When you quote, ask GEICO to price the same limits and deductibles you gave every other insurer on your list, and ask which discounts were applied automatically and which need proof, such as a student transcript or a defensive driving course certificate.

Programs GEICO advertises
DriveEasy
GEICO's driving program, which uses driving data the company collects to score trips and feed back driving feedback to the driver.
Mechanical Breakdown Insurance
An add-on GEICO describes on its coverage pages as covering repair costs for major mechanical parts, separate from a manufacturer warranty.
What to ask when you quote GEICO
Ask whether the quote includes emergency roadside service and rental reimbursement or prices them as add-ons, and ask how the DriveEasy program would treat your rate at renewal, including whether risky driving data can raise it.
GEICO is a wholly owned part of Berkshire Hathaway, and its insurers wrote $45,193 million of premiums in 2025, according to Berkshire's 2025 Form 10-K. Government Employees Insurance Company (NAIC 22063) gives the group its name, but it sits among at least seven Nebraska-domiciled GEICO insurers and two Texas county mutuals in Berkshire's subsidiary list, and in most state complaint tables we read, GEICO Secure, GEICO Casualty, GEICO General or a Texas county mutual carries far more auto business than the namesake company.
GEICO inside the Berkshire Hathaway 10-K
Berkshire reports GEICO as one of three insurance underwriting groups. The 10-K says GEICO is headquartered in Maryland and that its insurance subsidiaries' principal business is private passenger auto insurance for individuals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Sales run primarily through direct response, meaning applications submitted to the companies over the internet or by telephone, and to a lesser extent through insurance agencies. GEICO also operates an agency that places third-party coverage, such as homeowners, renters and life insurance, that GEICO's own insurers mostly do not write.
GEICO's own history page dates the company to 1936, when Leo and Lillian Goodwin founded it, and records that it became a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary in 1996 when Berkshire bought the outstanding stock.
| Measure | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premiums written | 39,837 | 42,916 | 45,193 |
| Premiums earned | 39,264 | 42,252 | 44,481 |
| Loss ratio (losses and LAE to premiums earned) | 81.0% | 71.8% | 72.3% |
All GEICO lines combined; private passenger auto is the principal business, but the totals also include motorcycle, RV, boat and commercial vehicle policies.
The filing explains the movement differently each year. In 2024, written premium rose 7.7% because average written premium per auto policy went up 7.8% while policies in force fell 0.5%. In 2025, written premium rose 5.3%, and Berkshire attributes the gain mainly to more policies in force. That shift from price-driven to count-driven growth is the main thing the 10-K says about GEICO's auto book in 2025.
The GEICO insurers and their codes
Berkshire's Exhibit 21 lists the domicile of each subsidiary. NAIC codes below are as printed in the Texas, Colorado and New York datasets.

GEICO Corporation, the intermediate holding company, is listed as a Delaware entity.
Complaint readings by GEICO company
Colorado's 2025 auto report gives GEICO Secure 36 complaints (13 confirmed) on $230.37 million of premium, an index of 0.62, and GEICO Casualty 26 complaints (6 confirmed) on $202.42 million, an index of 0.51. An index there compares a company's slice of complaints, protests included, with its slice of premium, so 1.00 is the market midpoint. The detail reports show the two trading places: GEICO Casualty's Colorado premium fell from $345.15 million in 2022 to $202.42 million in 2025, while GEICO Secure's rose from $130.02 million to $230.37 million. GEICO Choice, a smaller book at $33.65 million, read 1.30.
Illinois counts complaints per $1 million of earned premium and printed an all-company mean of 0.2657 for 2025. GEICO Secure logged 45 complaints on $230.4 million (0.1953), GEICO Casualty 55 on $226.9 million (0.2424) and GEICO Indemnity 29 on $111.8 million (0.2594).
Texas measures confirmed complaints against policies in force. For 2025, GEICO Texas County Mutual had 84 confirmed complaints across 855,054 policies, an index of 0.60, and GEICO County Mutual had 69 across 308,449, an index of 1.36. New York measures upheld complaints per $1 million of two-year average premium: for filing year 2024, GEICO General had 24 upheld out of 458 complaints on $3,249.6 million (0.0074), and GEICO Indemnity had 17 upheld out of 262 on $1,187.1 million (0.0143).
These are four different formulas, so a Texas index and an Illinois ratio cannot be lined up against each other. Within Texas, the two GEICO county mutuals land on opposite sides of 1.00, which is a reminder that the company named on your policy matters. Our Texas and New York pages cover each state's own rules.
GEICO questions
Which GEICO company insures my car?
It depends on your state and your risk profile. The GEICO group includes Government Employees Insurance Company, GEICO General, GEICO Indemnity, GEICO Casualty, GEICO Secure, GEICO Advantage, GEICO Choice and two Texas county mutuals, each with its own NAIC code. Your declarations page names the writing company. Use that name, not just GEICO, in any complaint to a state regulator.
How big is GEICO by premium?
Berkshire Hathaway's 2025 10-K reports GEICO premiums written of $45,193 million in 2025, up from $42,916 million in 2024 and $39,837 million in 2023. Those totals cover all GEICO lines, with private passenger auto as the principal business, so they are larger than auto premium alone.
Does GEICO sell through agents?
Mostly not. The 10-K says GEICO sells primarily by direct response, with applications submitted online or by phone, and to a lesser extent through insurance agencies. Separately, GEICO runs an insurance agency that places policies from other insurers for coverage GEICO's own companies mostly do not write, such as homeowners or renters insurance.
Why do the two Texas GEICO companies have such different complaint indexes?
Texas data for 2025 show GEICO Texas County Mutual at 0.60 on 855,054 policies and GEICO County Mutual at 1.36 on 308,449. Each index compares that company's share of confirmed complaints with its share of policies. The data do not say why they differ; the two books may cover different drivers or products. Check which one appears on your Texas policy.
What changed in GEICO results between 2024 and 2025?
In the 10-K, 2024 growth came from higher average premium per auto policy, up 7.8%, with policies in force down 0.5%. Growth in 2025, 5.3% in written premium, came mainly from more policies in force. The loss ratio moved from 71.8% to 72.3%, which Berkshire ties to higher claim severity partly offset by other factors.
