Quote shopping checklist

Comparable quotes are made before the first call, not during it. This checklist covers the documents and details each insurer will ask for, the decisions to settle in advance, the timing that gives quotes room to compete, and the questions that show what a quoted premium includes and what it leaves for renewal.

When to shop

Against your renewal date. Start three to four weeks before your current policy renews. That window is long enough to gather four to six quotes at one fixed specification and to hand your current insurer the same specification for a requote, and short enough that the quotes you collect are still valid when you switch. Quotes gathered the night before renewal are quotes gathered under pressure, and pressure produces mismatched specifications and lapsed deadlines.

After a life event that changes your rating facts. A move changes your garaging territory and possibly your state. A marriage changes the household your policy prices. A car replaced changes the vehicle rating and may change whether collision and comprehensive are worth carrying. A young driver licensed, or leaving for college without a car, changes the driver set. A loan paid off removes the lender's deductible ceiling and frees a decision you could not make before. A ticket or accident aging past an insurer's lookback period changes your tier. Each of these events makes your last comparison stale, because it priced a household that no longer exists in that form.

Not more often than the facts change. Re-quoting monthly against unchanged facts mostly re-measures the same prices and burns quote validity windows. Two disciplined comparison runs a year, at renewal and after any rating event, will catch nearly everything casual re-quoting catches, with a fraction of the effort.

After the checklist

Take your specification and fact sheet to the insurers in the insurance companies directory, four to six of them, through the channel each one uses. Enter every completed quote in the quote comparison worksheet as it arrives, and read the quote comparison guide before you decide, especially the section on auditing an outlier quote.

Published averages and benchmarks, not a quote. Not insurance advice. This checklist is an organizational tool; coverage requirements, lookback periods and program terms are set by states and insurers and vary.
