RATES BY STATE - MAP

Car insurance rates by state: the map (2024 figures)

This map shows 2024 figures from the NAIC average premium supplement, published September 2026 and verified on this site on 2026-10-18. These are 2024 published averages, not current 2026 prices and not a quote. Among the 25 states in the NAIC supplement data we publish, Florida has the highest combined average premium at $2,174.55 in 2024 and Wisconsin has the lowest at $1,112.23 in 2024. The other 26 entries (25 states plus the District of Columbia) are shown in grey as not published in our data, never as zero. Use the metric switcher, hover, tap or tab to a state to see its figure, or use the full table below the map.

Estimates and published averages, not a quote. Not insurance advice. Your actual premium will differ based on your address, vehicle, record, limits and insurer.

Every state in a table

Type a state name to filter the table and highlight that state on the map. Click any column heading to sort. All figures below are 2024 figures from the NAIC average premium supplement named in the source note. States and DC without a figure in our data read Not published in the figure columns. Not published in our data means we do not publish a figure for that state from this supplement on this site; it does not mean the premium is zero. Those rows always sort last in the figure columns.

For the national figure per month, and why quote-sample studies print a different number, see how much car insurance costs per month. More state-by-state readings, starting with uninsured drivers by state, are in benchmarks and market data.

How to read this map

Combined average premium is liability plus collision plus comprehensive for one insured vehicle. Average expenditure is what the average insured vehicle actually cost across the coverage mix people bought. Liability average premium is the liability part on its own, and it is the right comparison for a liability only quote. The three switcher views use the same 25 published states and the same source; only the figure being coloured changes. A state average blends rural and urban drivers, clean and ticketed records, and cheaper and more expensive cars, so use it as a benchmark for a quote rather than as a prediction of your own price. The full rate index on the home page lists the same states with their position against the countrywide combined figure, and the Car Rate Checker places your own quote against your state figure.

Grey on this map never means cheap and never means zero. It means not published in our data: we publish only the 25 states whose figures we verified from the supplement named below, and we would rather show a gap than fill it with an estimate.
